4558 IC is a low pass filter circuit ic (integrated circuit). It is used in amplifier. Its main purpose is to produce low frequency which gives us good quality in audio i.e. bass quality increases. It is used only to increase bass and today we will also learn to make a low pass filter circuit using this 4558 ic and this circuit made by us will be capable of working from 4 volts to 12 volts. If you look at the rest of the 4558 ic circuits, they work only on 12 volts and it also works on dual supply voltage i.e. 12-0-12 and at the same time it can also work on single supply voltage i.e. 12-0. The circuit we have made works on single supply voltage and it works quite well.

Required Components

To build this circuit, you'll need the following components:
  • JRC4558 IC / 4558 IC
  • Two 10uF 16V capacitors
  • 104pF capacitor
  • 473pF capacitor
  • 1000uF 16V capacitor
  • 1k resistor
  • Two 15k resistors
  • Two 22k resistors
  • Two 10k resistors
  • 100k resistor
  • 3.5mm audio cable jack

Follow Making Process Guide

1. Component Placement: Arrange all the components as per the circuit diagram. And before assembly make sure each component is in good condition no component is damaged and make it on the PCB Board itself.

2. Soldering: Following the circuit diagram, carefully connect the components on the PCB (Printed Circuit Board). Double check the connections to avoid any mistakes and when you attach the components to the IC with a soldering iron, avoid applying solder for too long on the IC pins or else the IC may get damaged due to excessive heat.

3. Connections: the value of the resistors and their location. Resistors and capacitors must be connected properly as shown in the diagram and their values must be the same to ensure proper functionality.

4. Audio Jack Wiring: The wires of the 3.5mm audio cable jack must be connected correctly. The two 22k resistors are important here, as the audio jack wires will be connected to them. Learn more about audio jacks.

5. Voltage Supply: As we said this circuit can work on 4V to 12V range. However, for optimum performance, it is recommended to use a 12V supply. Make sure the voltage supply is stable. It works on DC (Direct Current).

Working Principle

The audio signal enters the circuit through the audio jack. The 4558 ic acts as a filter to allow only low-frequency sounds to pass through. The output of the 4558 ic is then connected to an amplifier, which amplifies the filtered sound.

The primary advantage of this setup is that it amplifies low-frequency sounds, providing a richer bass experience and stronger vibrations. This setup is particularly effective at enhancing the bass response of your sound system.

Learn deep Understanding Low Pass Filter Circuits
A low pass filter (LPF) is an essential component that is used to allow signals having a frequency lower than a specific cutoff frequency to pass through while attenuating signals having a frequency higher than the cutoff frequency. Here is a detailed explanation of what a low pass filter is and how it works.

What is a Low Pass Filter?

A low pass filter allows low frequency signals to pass while blocking or attenuating high frequency signals to a lower frequency. The point at which the filter begins to reduce high frequencies is known as the cutoff frequency. This frequency is usually where the output signal drops to 70.7% of the input signal or -3dB (decibels) from the power level of the input signal

Types of Low Pass Filters

1. RC Low Pass Filter (Resistor-Capacitor): It is a simple passive filter made up of a resistor and a capacitor. The cutoff frequency is determined by the values of these components and can be calculated using the formula:

Formula for cutoff frequency (\( f_c \)):

\[

f_c = \frac{1}{2\pi RC}

\]

Where:

- \( f_c \) = Cutoff frequency (in Hertz)

- \( R \) = Resistance (in Ohms)

- \( C \) = Capacitance (in Farads)

This formula is used to calculate the cutoff frequency of a low-pass filter.

2. RL Low Pass Filter (Resistor-Inductor):In this type, an inductor is used instead of a capacitor. The inductor allows low frequency signals to pass through while blocking high frequency signals due to its inductive reactance, which increases with frequency

3. Active Low Pass Filter: This type of circuit involves using an operational amplifier (op-amp) along with resistors and capacitors. Active filters can provide benefits by providing better impedance matching and higher frequency stability and can improve the performance of the filter. Some of the best low pass filter ic are JRC4558 ic and LM324 ic

Working's
Overall, the low pass filter circuit is a very widely used circuit. It is made in many ways and its function is only to improve the audio quality. Nowadays, this circuit is used in many amplifiers.

Applications
Low pass filters are widely used in various applications, including:
Audio Systems: To eliminate high-frequency noise and enhance low-frequency sounds (bass).
Power Supplies: To smooth out voltage signals by filtering high-frequency noise.
Signal Processing: In digital signal processing, to remove high-frequency noise from signals.

Important Considerations

Single Voltage Supply: Use the same 12V battery for both the 4558 IC and the amplifier. This ensures a stable power supply and simplifies wiring. You can see in the block diagram

Grounding: If the audio input of your amplifier is connected to ground, make sure that the output of the 4558 IC i.e. the negative pin of the 10uF capacitor is connected to the audio input pin of the amplifier and not the ground pin. This setup ensures proper grounding and optimum performance.
